Christmas Decoration Narrative
By Emily Reed
Hello Everyone! I’m Emily, and today I will be telling you about my House at Christmas: how we decorate, and how we collect the décor! Decorating the house at Christmas is always something I love to do, and I can’t wait to share it with everyone!
Putting up the décor is so exciting and fun. I usually get told we’ll put it up on the 5th or 6th, but this year we put them up on the 2nd! Usually, if we’re lucky and all work together, we’ll get it done in one day. There are some things we wait to do, like putting up the outdoor décor and putting up the garland. We wait to put up the garland because we need two people, and a teenager can’t really help. Grandma and Grandpa usually put it up. We put it in entrances to halls, doorways, windows and around the tree and entertainment center.
We have a bunch of bins we go through. Mom and Grandma go to town and get batteries so we can test out our singing toys. We have a lot we had to say goodbye to. Ones we really really loved, but we always end up finding newer and better replacements! If he can, Grandpa fixes them. He’s pretty good at knowing how to repair the insides. The ones I usually hope work are our singing Rudolph toys. We have a complete set, with some being made by different manufacturers. I remember having them since I was very little, so it’s amazing they still work over 7 or 8 years. Some don’t move like they used to, and some had to be replaced. Our old Rudolph broke, and it hurt so badly. Luckily, browsing a store, my Mom and I found one, only for it to break the next year. The next year, I worked and worked to get it to sing. Finally, I found a brand new one, in the box! We also found multiple others who we didn’t know existed, such as Sam the Snowman! Rudolph is made by a different toy company, so he stands out pretty well.
My grandpa just loves the funny ones. He takes them to his work, where people go crazy over them.We always collected bunch of Santa’s that dance, and we place them around the fire place in the family room. Over the years, some didn’t work, and we had to toss them. Some we keep for décor. I had a favorite who danced to ‘’Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town’’. He broke his arm, however, and is in a bin in the shed. We started collecting Hallmarks singing snowmen toys. We have a bunch in the family room as well! If I had to pick one singing toy that was my favorite, I’d say it’d be the singing country Santa, who sings a country Christmas song. I love all the others as well, but I think he’s pretty cool.
We have two trees, one we consider mine, and the other that goes in the living room. Mine is decorated with ornaments of characters, such as Rudolph, Frosty and My Little Pony. The one in the living room has normal ornaments like balls and snowflakes. Grandpa puts them up, along with the lights and we all decorate it. By my tree, I have a light up Rudolph and Arctic Fox. Rudolph sadly only lights up once and a while. It’s rare to see him light up for more than 3-4 days.
We love the Rankin Bass Christmas movies. The company are the original creators of the Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer, Frosty The Snowman, The Year without a Santa Claus, and other movies. We watch them every year, and even have décor! Earlier this year, I found a set of plushies from the movie, Santa Claus is coming to town. I almost have the whole set! I adore them. They even still have their tags. They are the only set we have so far for the movie. We also have a Rudolph clock that sings the Rudolph song every hour in the daytime. I already mentioned the Singing Rudolph’s, but we also have some singing Frosty’s! I have my own set of Rudolph figurines. I also have a Frosty Bobblehead and Snow globe. I have a statue and snow globe of a Rudolph from a different version of the movie, too. The bookshelf is always my shelf I place my décor on.
My Grandma collects ceramic Santa’s, and my Grandpa collect ceramic Snowmen. The snowmen are always in the living room, while grandma’s Santas are in the family room. They are all carefully wrapped in newspaper before being put away. Grandma and Grandpa have been collecting them for years! They still add onto their collections as time goes on. We look like Christmas hoarders!
Grandpa and I always do the outside décor. We pull out the inflatables and check to see if they work. Like I said, we have had to toss some adorable ones. But we always can replace them! We test them to see if they work, and then figure out which we put in the front, and which in the back. This year, we have a total of 7 new inflatables! We always put the Christmas sleigh in front. It’s been like that for a while. We then go out by the road and see how they look. Sometimes it rains, and we can’t put them up. When I go to put them up, they sometimes are stuck in the rose bushes. The get holes and won’t blow up like they used to, or their motor is acting up. Grandpa comes to save the day, and brings them back to life!
I’m in charge of turning them off at night, indoor and outdoor! When I’m sick, Grandpa or Grandma does it. I love doing it! Every time I head outside to turn off the outdoor ones, I tell grandpa, ‘’It’s time they all must melt.’’ After I’m done, I come inside and fake cry, saying ‘’It’s done! They’ll be back tomorrow.’’ I always turn them all off at 10:00 pm sharp!
We don’t just collect in the Christmas season, oh no. We collect all year! Sometimes we’ll find décor or inflatables on sale and buy them for the next year. We often find our décor at thrift stores, such as Goodwill and St. Vinnies! We go to Kmart and sometimes get the inflatables. There is a huge Santa, bigger than ours that I REALLY want. One day I’ll convince grandpa we need it… One day…
Mom and Grandma aren’t really the ones who go overboard with the decorating. It’s usually me and Grandpa. Grandpa is fascinated in the outdoor things and the funny dancing toys, and I love all things Rudolph and Frosty!
I hope you enjoyed this article! I always love to talk about our house, but most people already know about it, and it’s rare people don’t know. As far as I’ve seen, we’re the big collectors in our town. Please enjoy the pictures that I took, and trust me when I say that’s not all. I couldn’t get everything!
